The importance of reducing teacher talking time
Today all we hear is about pair work or group work, student involvement in the learning process. So,why reduce teacher talking time(TTT)?
First,if students are left out of involvement, they will definitely lose interest, become bored etc.Just think about those times when your teacher talked all the time and didn't allow you to speak at all.I personally remember my High school Literature teacher who used to speak 100% of the time. There was no time for us to speak.Even when she asked us about something, the answer was again provided by her.We not only got bored during literature classes, but even hated literature because we thought that it was extremely difficult.Of course,if you don't talk, exchange ideas with your peers or with the teacher, how can you expect yourself to learn?
Now, just imagine yourself teaching some grammar rules. If you talk all the time,I am sure that however excellent your explanation may be,you're on the verge of losing students' interest and make the learning of English such a tedious task. So,I guess that avoiding explanation when it is not needed would really help.Nowadays, students can gather information from different means of sources, you(as the teacher)are not the only one means of information. This means that you can just lead them to find out rules by themselves.Aren't you guys more curious and interested when you are required to reflect on something and find out the answer relying on your knowledge and intuition rather than given some rules and being asked to put the rules into practice?
Another good thing you can do to minimize TTT is to ask students to give feedback to each other rather than to you .They cooperate with each other and also learn more from one another. You may use for example, students feedback on each other's projects and tasks.Students feel better when they are given suggestions by their peers rather than by the teacher. However, even here you need to be careful because there are students who prefer to be corrected or given feedback by the teacher.I guess that knowing your students may lead to a better decision. So,I still believe that your comments are important and necessary.
If you really know how to talk to students,I mean how to rough tune the language to their level, students get a chance to hear language that is certainly above their own productive level and that helps students to increase their level of English.
I guess that we should think about other ways of making students acquire the language rather than giving them rules or whatever and not allowing them to participate in the learning process.
All in all,I strongly believe that the best lessons are the ones when student talking time is maximized, but where at appropriate moments during the lesson, the teacher is not afraid to summarize what is happening, tell a joke or even participates when he sees a deviation from the topic or when the students find it difficult to express themselves. As Josef Albers says ''Good teaching is more a giving of right questions than a giving of right answers.
I agree with you Suela when you say that we as Teachers should think about other ways to make students able to acquire language and to give op of the usual methods of just giving them rules and such.
ReplyDeleteA very good closure with the quote from Josep Albers...And how I wished teachers would follow that quote too.
Thank u for the comment and also for really understanding my real viewpoint of this reflection.
DeleteA very important theme you chose to write about. cant agree more, even though as teachers we will be lead to think that the more we talk the more we're helping students learn. We should learn to eventually remove this mindset for the sake of our students and be aware of this every time we are teaching.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words darling. We should actually think of ways for helping our learners.
DeleteI enjoyed reading your post.Your topic was very interesting especially the ending,I think that as teachers to be we must take into consideration this saying if we want to bo good teachers!
ReplyDeleteThanks Fatjona! That's one of my favorite sayings!!
Deleteis there any advantage of using this TTT in class? Please, Let me know if there's any.
ReplyDeleteWell, the purpose of this post is not to refrain teachers from talking in the class, but to put some effort in order to minimize TTT and maximize STT. Actually,I have stated in my post that ''I still believe that your comments are important and necessary.''The last paragraph actually tells you some of the advantages of TTT. If you read it more carefully,I'm sure you will find the answer.Thank u!
DeleteFrom 1 to 10 how important is the TTT in classes nowadays? Let me know.
ReplyDeleteHahaha I was really expecting such a question from u Kleo. It's actually hard to choose one number because there's always the question of why choosing one number instead of the others. The idea is to bare in mind that students are the ones who need practice. The onus is on the teacher to find out how he should help his students to learn.
DeleteAnd who else would find such kind words to make a comment. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post and the fact that the topic was like mine. It is good that you have provided an example of your teacher in high school. This shows why we should minimize teacher talking time and maximize student talking time.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Suela when you say that students should give feedback to each-other rather than to the teacher, in this way they may feel more confortable to say their opinion. Thank you for sharing your experience.
